Why are some managers resource wasters, and others leaders unfolders of potential?
What kind of consciousness is currently paving the way for managers to become leaders, incite transformation, and not just superficial changes? Most of all, it is the willingness of people to accept that they won’t get paid straight away for every problem-solving idea that gets presented. Instead they will have to learn to accept unknown circumstances and personal processes, and maybe even endure the fear of the unknown itself, but that’s what enables a whole new level of innovation to take place. Does that sound familiar? You want to bring forth innovation, and instead you get product improvements? You want innovation and what comes out is a completely useless mind-fuck of a product, because nobody understands how to use it?
In business, when our intention is to truly make a difference for our clients, we don’t need more rigors, more struggles, more strength, or more power, but more consciousness. You don’t have to do more, but instead be more focused. You don’t need to be political, but instead bold. Not externally motivated, but internally sourced. Not faster, but more aware. Not fixated on the future, but living in the here and now. That takes developing awareness of what is important to us and to our clients. This isn’t possible if we stay stuck in a permanent thinking mode. As leaders, we need to keep a cool head, and connect it with the fire in our hearts, and the consciousness for a certain direction – strategic and human. People don’t seek out numbers, they seek out energy, and consciousness is energy.
How do we acquire this consciousness? Not by looking outside of ourselves with such questions: What are my colleagues and the competition, up to? And how do I get ahead faster? Consciousness springs forth from the inside, and that is the good news! Because, for the first time, that means that you don’t have to try and be like the others, and instead you can just be yourself, the real authentic you. Granted, this might not happen overnight and it takes some practice, but how many years of hard work have you already invested to get to where you are right now? And are you truly happy? And what price did you pay to get thus far – health-wise, family-wise, and relationship-wise? Do you go out the door to work every morning with a smile on your face, and return home the same way? The key word is Meditation. No, that doesn’t mean you have to spend all day burning incense and repeating mantras while sitting in the lotus position. It will suffice you to just take a few minutes everyday to be still – mentally and physically. It turns off all of the chatter in your brain. Bethany Kok, a young psychologist at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig, studied the influence of the mind on our health, and the results are amazing. The tone of the so-called vagus nerve that runs from the brainstemthrough the lungs, heart and intestine, has a significant influence on our digestion, social contact and orgasm. If that isn’t motivating, then I don’t know what is. But how do we strengthen the tone? You guessed it, through meditation. Whatever form of meditation you choose is irrelevant, the main thing is that you do it.
